The Flower Types
The inflorescence is a cluster of flowers arranged on a floral axis. Because of its appearance and scent, the flower is the most eye - catching element of a plant.
By Ovary Position
Hypogynous FlowersAn ovary connected to the receptacle superiorly is one that is attached there before other floral components. Authentic berries, drupes, and other fleshy fruits have superior ovaries. This arrangement is known as a hypogynous flower.
Perigynous FlowersNearly equal amounts of ovary are present above and below the insertion point in a half-inferior ovary. Other fractions can be used to indicate inferiority in other, more subtle ways. A "one-fifth inferior ovary," for instance, has around one fifth of its length beneath the insertion site. The portion of a "three-quarters inferior ovary" that is above the insertion is also only one fourth of the total.
Epigynous FlowersBelow the attachment of other floral components is an inferior ovary. A pome is a sort of succulent fruit that is sometimes used as an illustration, although a detailed examination of some pome species will reveal that they are actually half-inferior ovarian structures. Epigynous flowers are known for having inferior ovaries.
